SCIENCE LESSON

SUBTOPIC Shapes

LEVEL OF STUDENTS Beginners with experience in colors

SUGGESTED TIME FRAME One lesson of 20 minutes

GENERAL OBJECTIVES Students will be able to differentiate objects based on contrast in physical characteristics such as color, texture, size and shape. Students will also be able to recognize and sort objects by color families.

LANGUAGE NEEDED

MATERIALS
-One large bag of square caramel candies
-One large bag of Gummi Bears
-Four flash cards depicting the shapes of circles, squares, and triangles
-One large poster with two horizontal columns labeled square, triangle, and circle and five vertical columns each labeled with swatches of the colors red, orange, blue, yellow, and green.

UNDERSTANDING
1) The teacher begins with a review of the colors. The teacher holds up five flash cards colored red, orange, blue, yellow, and green. As the teacher holds each card up the name of the color is announced. The students repeat the colors.
2) The teacher introduces the flash cards showing the shapes and identifies each shape. The children repeat the name of each of the shapes.
3) The teacher introduces the caramels and Gummi Bears which are mixed into one large bowl. The teacher reaches into the bowl and displays a piece of candy that is red and says: Un dulce rojo/ One red candy. The teacher picks up another piece of red candy and says: Dos dulces rojos/Two red candies. The teacher continues this pattern until the number six and then starts over with the another color.
