Sawgrass Elem., Sunrise, FL
Materials Required: teacher-made worksheets from magazines/pictures
Activity Time: 15-20 minutes
Concepts Taught: Teaching Contractions

Once these are made, they can be used for contraction practice in groups or individually. Students really enjoy these puzzles.
To do before: Cut out a picture from a magazine or old calendar. Glue a white paper to the back. Down the left side, list contractions. On the right side, write the word that the contraction stands for.
For ex. 1. don't do not
2. can't can not
3. I'd I would
Then with a ruler, draw a line horizontally down the middle and vertically in between each contraction. Cut them in rectangles.
Students then face each rectangle picture side down and try to match up the contractions with the words. When they finish, they will turn each rectangle over and if they got them all correct, they should see a picture.
