Does Character Matter?

This week's Reference Skills ( http://www.rhlschool.com/ref3n23.htm) introduces vocabulary for this selection.

Read the selection without stopping to choose the correct missing words. Then read it again, pausing to underline the correct words. Finally, read the selection again to see if it makes sense.

Does the personal __1__ of a public official, especially our nation's __2__ official, really make a difference? This question has generated a lot of controversy lately.


On the one hand, there are those who say it __3__ matter, that it's none of the public's business. They say that what matters is how effective the president is in doing his __4__. If he's doing a good job of running the country and dealing with the rest of the world, that's all we need to __5__, they assert.


Those on the __6__ side of the issue say that job performance is not __7__. They __8__ that the president is a role model, someone who sets an example. They also claim that none of us can __9__ him, if he isn't honest and trustworthy with his own family and close friends. Also, job performance is affected, they __10__. If the president has to spend time dealing with the consequences of his misbehavior, it distracts him from his official duties.


Can someone be a good president if he lacks strong moral character? What do you think?
