Re: SpEd "push in"
Posted by JJ on 5/15/08

I have my push in come during SSR and she does reading conferences with the
kids. At first she wanted to do guided groups, but it just felt weird to me. The
kids that she worked with felt isolated. They were doing different lessons and
felt very different from the rest of the group.

Since she is now doing SSR conferences with kids, she spends more one on one
time with the 3 kids in my class that she works with. She also sometimes reads
with other kids as well, and now everyone has more of a relationship with her.
Also, they are familiar with what she is doing because I have just given her my
conference forms which she uses just like I do. She does take better notes than
I do though. We meet and discuss the kids once in awhile as well. She is there
for 30 minutes each time and reads with each child for 10 minutes. 10 minutes
one on one when she is there, seems better to me than 30 minutes in a small
group where the kids feel self-conscious and embarrassed. Also, two of the
kids are really ADD and even in a small group need a ton of redirecting. One on
one they need almost no redirecting and love the adult attention.

I don't know how long she will be there for, but if you can arrange it during SSR
I have found it very helpful.
