    Re: SpEd "push in"
    Posted by JJ on 6/02/08

When I have a group of kids who CAN choose their own books, I do
the book baskets (like this year and the year before last.)
However, when I have had years when I have VERY low readers who
need the support of a book bag, I will have everyone have a book
bag. For the kids who are very behind, I will choose 4 books for
their bag, and they choose one. They read the books and they we
do that again. This is how I make sure they are reading
appropriate books. I am talking about third graders who are
reading at a very beginning first grade level or something, not
kids who are just slightly low. Those kids would be too
embarrassed to go to the shelf and pick out the books that are
really right for them, and in a third grade classroom, I probably
don't have many books that are the right level for them. I pick
them out and try to find good books at their level, but that don't
look to babyish. It's a balancing act, for sure!
