    Re: Reading assassments
    Posted by JJ on 7/18/08

I have a very easy book of running records called "3 Minute
Reading Assessments" by Timothy Rasinski. For my fourth
graders, I had the 1-4 book and the 5-8 book just because I
do tend to have some readers that read 5-8 levels.

It's based on national standards, so your reading standards
may differ (our district has very HIGH standards, so kids
who meet the standard in this book are often considered low
according to our district. But, seeing how they do in this
books DOES make me feel better.)

In fact, the boy I am tutoring is low in our school, and
according to the Rasinsnki book should be reading 80-130
words in the fall. He read at 90, and it boosted his
confidence to know he was in the middle. While this is
totally within the norm, at our school he is very low... it
all depends on where you are!

This will be much easier than using the reading a-z. For
those you will have to hunt and peck with various books
until you find the right one (like the DRA.) If you get this
book, at least you can give the fall fourth grade test and
see if they pass or not. If they are lower, you can use the
third grade benchmark tests from a-z, and if they are
higher, go up. It will be a good starting off point. Also,
I think A-Z runs differently than fountas and pinnells guided
reading, so double check the letter correlations per grade.
