    Re: Gifted Gift for School
    Posted by DGR on 7/11/08

The GT students at my old school designed and created an
outdoor classroom. Each year they improved on it. There was
actually a hiking trail with a water source (small creek)
Students marked the paths and the different types of plants.
They were able to use the creek to study water samples. It was
    quite impressive!
At my new school, I'd like to create a smaller version of this.
We have only a small grounds area to work with. I'd like to
start this year with the landscaping and some outdoor furniture
(maybe picnic tables) where we and other students could go
outside and work and study the habitat.
Something else my students and I have done in the past - not a
gift to the school, but very worthwhile... we researched about
animal over-population. I had a guinea pig in my class and was
guilty of breeding and producing babies. After researching, we
decided that we could create a haven for unwanted guinea pigs.
Any students (or others) who no longer wanted their guinea pigs
would turn them over to us. We took care of them, ensuring that
they were in good health. Once we knew their temperament and
that they were healthy, we would put them up for adoption,
making them available to other children. In doing this, the new
owner had to formally adopt to te pet and commit to taking care
of it. Parents were involved in the adoptions as well. The
students had to be approved. It was a great experience for
    everyone!
