Re: Anne Frank Controversial?
Posted by HG mom on 7/20/08
Things like the saying pledge of allegiance- she feels that unless people
really understand what they are pledging they shouldn't say it and feels that
kids shouldn't be forced to say it daily since most of them aren't aware of
what it means. Then she took it a bit further with peer pressure- kids
looking alike, acting alike- it being "cool" to outcast people based on how
they look or where they come from. She's also aware as to what is going on in
other parts of the world. We used to joke in college about how freshman
tended to compare everything to Nazi Germany- well my daughter is rather like
a freshman- lol.
She just read a book called the Spiders Web. It's about a teen girl that
falls in with a crowd of Neo-Nazi's. Before this book, she was not aware that
there were Neo-Nazis. Good read- mature themes, though. The kids in the book
drink beer (among their tamer activities)and it is very violent.
Unusual describes my kiddo very well. I remember this little bitty kid
sitting in bed with her Picture Book of Anne Frank asking me to explain more
about the Nazis and what they did. I was thinking, "OMG this poor kid is
going to have nightmares!" But I just went with it, easy at first, and every
night for a week at bedtime she asked more and more questions. She's never
had nightmares or been scared- a bit of outrage and appropriate sadness, but
nothing overblown.
She's not one of those kids who is super-serious all the time, either. She's
happy go lucky and quite a clown. She's just very opinionated and
philosophical when she wants to be- always has been. This year she's learning
informal logic for the first time- God help us all!!!
Thanks for asking. If you ever run into a kid who is similar, you can know
now she's not a freak ;)
