Post: HucK Finn and Anne Frank

    Posted by Hastor on 7/20/08

Intelligent children who can read and think critically at
an early age are capeable of 'enjoying' some advanced
texts. However, just because a child can swallow caviar
doesn't mean that he/she gleens the subtle (or not so
    subtle)delicacy.
I advised my fifth grade teachers not to teach HF not
because the children wouldn't be able to understand it but
because it is a complex text meant for a more mature
pallette. I will be teaching it to my 8th graders this
year and I am still a bit apprehensive.
5th graders will get much more out of 'Hatchet' or 'Number
the Stars' than they ever would from 'Huckleberry Finn'
or 'The diary of Anne Frank'.
