    Re: Very high IQ's
Posted by How long do you have them? on 8/17/08

Yes, children with this high of an IQ are different than the the "regular"
gifted students. The range from 119 to 146 is huge. Just ask the Spec Ed
teacher to explain what the difference between a student with a 70 IQ and a
    43 IQ would be.

How many minutes do you have these students? You also need to be thinking
how you are going to help their regular ed teachers adjust for their needs
in the mainstream classroom as well. These children should be working
YEARS above their classmates. (If they aren't, you need to be asking why.)
How are their teachers going to differentiate the material enough to keep
these children motivated and actually learning material that is new to
them. Often children at the highest levels of giftedness enter 1st grade
fully capable of doing 5th and 6th grade work and having already mastered
many of the skills that would normally be taught in 2nd, 3rd and 4th
grade. To say they absorb information like a sponge is an understatement.
They are also capable of combining the material that they have gleamed from
many different sources and creating brand new products with it.

Is your school looking at a grade skip or single subject acceleration? If
a 2nd grader is working at 5th grade math, his classroom teacher can not
differentiate enough for him to learn new material, much less challenge him.

In our situation, the student was grade skipped one year and then single
subjected acclerated two more years for math.

You need to find out as much as you can about the characteristics of
children at this range and have a conference with their teachers. My
student's math teacher was totally unprepared for a student who only had to
see the material one time before she had it completely mastered. He
accused her of lying and falsifying the pretests. By the time he truly
realized what she was capable of, alot of damage had been done.
