My son was gifted in math. He took the ACT in the 6th grade and scored 29 in math. The school wanted him to take general math in the 7th grade. I thought he was ready for algebra and had the measurable documentation to prove it. I had many meetings where I respectfully requested that his advanced needs in math be met. I hit brick wall after brick wall. Finally, I casually mentioned seeking assistance from an organization in our area that represents parents of special education students (usually those with disabilities) and advocate for their rights, even to the point of litigation. BINGO. Got what I wanted and continued to throughout his high school days. My advice: Read the special education documents on your child carefully. Know your rights. Seek advocacy, if needed. Get what your child needs and don't be deterred by road blocks.
