Re: Noise

I just have small groups this year--8 students in each grade
level--just happenstance. I give out bucks for good
behavior, and this seems to work wonderfully. If they get
loud, then I just get out the bucks and go right to the
person who is being quiet or using an inside voice and
reward and vocalize why they are getting the reward. My
kids work hard to earn those bucks for prizes. I do reserve
the right to take away bucks also for bad behavior. I
usually don't have to resort to that one.
You kind of do have to set up a routine or way at first for
their behavior. Give them a routine day where they kind of
know what to expect. I do my days in the same order, just
so the students can work on autopilot if need be. Of
course, labs and experiments I try to establish procedures
as well. In logic, I let them work as pairs if they are
using quiet voices. If they don't, they work alone. Right
now things are pretty calm and collective, but it gets
rowdier when they get to know each other, holiday times,
etc. and will push harder.
I hope you can get that noise level at hand now--it gets
worse later on.
