Education on the 'why' and training in manners works well
along with changing the acoustics of the room. Many already
know that older rock'n'roll artists have lost hearing, but
don't know they are damaging their own hearing by some of
the activities they choose to do. You can google all sorts
of info to find facts of interest to your age group, and
borrow a meter to measure your environment. The rule of
thumb: if you can't hear the person next to you when using
an indoor voice, it's too loud. If you have to raise your
voice to converse with the person next to you, it's too
loud. As in loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage
if it goes on too long. Most teachers here use the lights
on/off rule as a signal that the noise level has crept up
too much after they train the children on indoor voice
volume control (by grade 2 most have it down).
On manners, it's an indoor voice at all times as we
certainly don't want to permanently damage someone else's
hearing by our inconsiderate unladylike or ungentlemanlike
behavior (sounds picky, but we have some that like to shriek
the ear-piercer & others that will shout as loud as
possible in the cafeteria, as well as some that will respond
to a clap signal by being as loud as they would in a
football stadium and adding stomping & yelling at that the
top of their lungs). For cafeteria: we use lights on/off to
signal that conversation has become too loud; after the
first month shriekers/yellers are given 1/2 recess
dentention for first offense, then removal and whole recess
detention for 2nd offense at that lunch (to a table by
themselves facing away from everyone)
