
You sound like a well-qualified teacher/counselor to me, and
it sounds like that isn't the issue. You are listing lots of
degrees and certifications, and you sound like you are
wondering why you don't have this one. I'm wondering if you
were writing with the same purpose as your other programs.
When you are writing anything for NB entries and AC questions,
you are always addressing how it impacts student learning. It
doesn't matter what it is.......it HAS to impact student
learning.
For example:
1. I have helped raise almost $20,000 for my school as a co-
chair for our Market Day grocery fundraiser. I've done this
for 6 years now, and our school has enjoyed the extra funds.
It's a stretch to connect that activity to student learning.
It does look nice on a resume.
2. I have organized science supplies in my school. We now have
a great deal available for hands-on science. Teachers can walk
into the closet and find exactly what they need. It would be a
stretch to explain how this impacts student learning, but it's
better than #2. I could put this on my resume.
3. We have a large population of Arabic speaking families, and
I don't speak Arabic. I do understand that I need to figure
out a way to communicate with this community in order to
support student learning. When I have parent meetings, I have
designed certain resources with our Arabic laison to make
things easier. Doesn't this sounds like it's getting closer to
supporting student learning? I might not put this on a resume.
I might address this at an interview.
4. Over the summer, I collect a lot of packaging from frozen
dinners and juice containers so I have storage pieces for word
study, number flash cards, dice, etc. I have a self-serve area
in my room for resources. How might this impact student
learning? This wouldn't go on a resume.
5. My students have folders with differentiated resources that
they use for different courses (Math, LA, Spelling, Writing).
How would this impact student learning? I wouldn't have this
on my resume.
Student learning doesn't have to be a 520 on an SAT test or a
pass proficient on a state assessment. It could be a level of
performance in organization. It could be an increase in days
present/ days arriving on time (with eased transition in the
AM). It could be an increase in participation in classroom
activities rather than efforts to cut class. It could be an
increase in days eating lunch rather than avoiding the
cafeteria. How would eating lunch impact student learning?
