Post: AR testing

Posted by Deb on 9/22/07

Several first and second grade teachers in my district use
the progression of taking AR tests in this way: Students
are to pass 3 AR tests with a score of 100% on a certain
reading level such as 1.6 before they can read books on
the next level, 1.7. The student then should pass 3 AR
tests at the 1.7 level with 100& mastery before they can
go on to the 1.8 level and so on and so on. I'm not sure
how they determine what level each student starts out on.
It has always been my understanding that students should
be allowed to read within their ZPD zone based upon the
STAR reading test. However, sometimes that even needs to
be adjusted accordingly. Any thoughts out there on the
testing progression used by my co-workers?
