Re: How to Motivate 3rd & 4th Grade Readers
Posted by reading teacher on 7/12/08

*expose them to a variety of literature
*read to them everyday with a few "think alouds" thrown in
*give several book talks a week (yourself)
*take time for students to present book talks daily
*have students keep a record of books they've read
*have students keep a record of "Someday" book - books they
    want to read someday
*give them 30 - 40 min. a day for their independent reading
with you conferencing with 5-6 students a day
*have tubs of books related to the studies in your content
areas and talk about those books
*help your stuggling readers find books at their level, but
more importantly what they are interested in (don't let the
SR# on the spine control their book choice)
*get reluctant readers "hooked" on their book by reading the
first chapter or pages with the student and express your
enthusiam for their selection - some kids don't know how to
be excited about a book (AR burnout)
*spend time reading books with your proficient and advanced
students - they want you to be interested in their books also
*use literture in your Writing Workshop
*show students how much you love reading!! SHOW don't tell

The list goes on and on.

    Read Regie Routman's "Reading Essentials",
Nancie Atwell's "In the Reading Zone"
Fountas and Pinnell's "Guiding Reading and Writing"
Frank Serafini's "The Reading Workshop: Creating Spaces for
Readers", "Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days"

Again the list goes on and on.

The bottom line is - stop making reading a miserable burden.
Let kids read, let kids talk to other kids about what they're
reading, YOU talk to kids about what they're reading.
