If they are doing that my reading instruction is simple. My students do LOVE to read. They do not want their independent reading time shortened, they do not want to skip our book talk sessions, they want to talk and talk and talk about our read aloud. During their free time they go to their book box and select something to read based upon their "mood" at the time. They know they are not "required" to read anything. It is a "gift" to have additional reading time. My reluctant readers do need more of my attention, but I always present reading in a postive way. It's never a "you have to because..." Kids love good books! They don't love the pressures that AR points and reading requirements place on them.
