Posted by Victoria on 7/14/08 Thank you to you both...I should mention that I don't MAKE them fill out forms on their books, though. It's just a tool that they know they can use to help them remember from chapter to chapter. I had one student, who was a struggling reader, say that it really helped him and once he made that first good grade on a chapter book, he knew he could do it again. I appreciate your ideas...I've done read-alouds occasionally, but I had not thought about doing it in small groups for my struggling readers. I will also check out those books mentioned. My reading instruction in college was sadly lacking due to having a professor who wasn't very good at teaching it. We did more "fluffy" stuff than talk about sound practices. I do have one question though. If I do away with the chapter book requirement, how can I encourage them to move up and keep progressing? Literally 3/4 of my class last year would have stayed in picture books all year and thought nothing of it. They have no drive to read longer books...they just want it to be easy. We had kids who would read only picture books throughout the year in other classes. I do feel like most of my students are ready for at least the easy chapter books and I accomodate for those who aren't. Any suggestions?
