    Post: AR Incentive Frustration

Posted by Need Help on 7/13/08

I teach 2nd grade and have been teaching and using AR for
10 years. In the past in my class, students make their own
goal, something do-able for them, read books at their
independent reading level, and earn points every quarter.
If they make their goal, there is some celebration at the
end of the quarter they participate in (that the class
chooses). If they don't, they don't get to attend. Of
course my problem is one that has been listed before...it
does nothing to motivate my lower readers, even if their
goal is only 4 points for the quarter. It's always still
a struggle for them. So what I'd like to know is how
people use AR in their classrooms that don't use
incentives. I've thought about having a class goal vs.
individual goals. Or should I just have no goals at all,
and students just take tests for the fun of it? Need
    help! Thanks.
