Many times I've noticed my lower readers have trouble
understanding how to get into and use the program. Also, the
questions are often in words they either don't know or can't
decode which also affects their willingness to take tests. I
walk through a test with my students when they are ready to
take their first one. We read the questions together while I
emphasize asking for help if they can't read a word on the
screen. I show them how the test asks questions that are
answered in the book by finding the answer in the book for
them. They need to know the answer is not something new they
think would be reasonable or normal for themselves. Low
readers often have limited short term memory so reading a book
a minimum of 3 times is the rule in my classroom. After I walk
them through a test, the next test they have to take while
looking at the book to find the answer. Once they are truly
comfortable with remembering the information, then I encourage
them to leave the book closed and see if they can still get
100%. If anyone argues with you about this method, it is
called scaffolding and we use it in other areas of curriculum
    so why not AR?
