Re: AR Incentive Frustration

I love the scaffolding idea. It makes so much sense;
however, I would have never thought of it on my own.
Another reason I have found that some students don't meet
their goals is because they can't read at home.
Unfortunately, the homelife of some students is less than
ideal, and it is impossible to read with mom and dad
fighting all night, or when you have to take care of younger
siblings, etc. One way we have found to help this situation
is to offer (or strongly recommend for certain students) an
after school reading club. One day a week the teacher stays
an hour after school with the students and the whole time is
designated to nothing but AR reading & testing. Of course
it only works because we have late busses that run and take
the students home.
I keep the library open on those days, or If I can't, then
the teacher will check out several books to take to the
classroom for students to read & test on for that day.
She may provide pretzels or popcorn some days, but the
students like staying after, especially once they see their
Ar points rising.
