    I hate AR. I teach 8th grade E/LA and the lower grades in our
    m.s. misuse AR to the point where the kids don't bother even
    reading the books. They just repeatedly take the tests over
    until they pass them for the credit. It takes me 2 months, two
    novels, to extinguish the idea that reading is getting through
    texts. Once they begin to understand theme and big issues, they
    slow down and start to enjoy reading and the craft of writing.
