Re: What's the easiest way to grade?
Posted by Deb ms/IA on 8/20/08

In my 8th grade class this is how I grade AR. it is
weighted as 25percent of the total grade in reading (tests -
    40 percent, 15 percent homework, 10 percent projects, 10
percent Skills Iowa - just in case you want to know the other
    grading components.

In AR I grade on percent of goal made every week. We have
nine week quarters so they have nine weeks to complete their
100 percent goal for the quarter. Each week I move the goal
up by about 10percent. So its a revolving grade that
increases. At quarter mid term progress report time they are
to have 50 percent complete and at the end of the quarter
they are to have the entire goal for that nine weeks
complete. As for points 20 percent equals 20 points on up
each week to the 100 percent goal. If they complete the goal
they get 100 points. IF they complete 75 percent of the goal
    they get 75 points.

I also grade on the average they are passing quizzes. AR
says the kids are growing if they pass at 85 percent or
above. So this is also done weekly it is based on 100 points
(the ultimate percentage passed) on down to whatever percent
they are passing. So if they are passing quizzes at 800
percent they get 80 points, 100 percent is 100 points. I
check and grade this weekly and discuss it with the kids
during my weekly status of the class time.

I then give points for vocabulary as several quizzes now have
matching vocab quizzes. This is also done on a 100 point
scale and updated weekly. If students don't take vocab
quizzes (mostly because in the past there haven't been too
many vocab quizzes) I just leave the grade blank. So if they
are passing vocab at 85 percent they get 85 points.

So in AR I give three grades, goal made, average passing
    quizzs and vocab.

Is that as clear as mud?
