Posted by modify as needed for IEP kids on 8/31/08 Carrie-since you are setting up your grading system, may I suggest that you make AR's either extra credit for kids with IEP's or make sure their goal is manageable because they have to put so much extra effort into all of their classes just to be able to pass in many cases. Also, you do not want to stifle a child's love of reading just because they can't read as fast as others and have a hard time passing tests due to a disability. Please err on the side of caution and make the AR goal very, very low for ADHD kids to start with. Give them an incentive to exceed the goal. Some of them have a very hard time finding a book at their level short enough to read in the time allotted. Junior High libraries tend to not have many short chapter books at the lower levels or that would interest a learning disabled child. Thanks-from the mom a special kid who took two years to get back to opening a book on her own because of being forced to do AR's by an inflexible LA teacher in grades 7 & 8.
