Many of my students qualify for a reader, but because STAR is testing vocabulary and places the student on grade level for independent reading, they get no reader. I do, however, often test the student TWICE with STAR. The student takes the test on his/her own the first time, and the second time the student has the questions read. Having those two levels helps me a great deal with working with them in the classroom. For instance, I had one student who scored pre-K in independent reading, but scored a 5.8 GE when the test was read to him. My students reading more than three grades below grade level are pulled for guided group instruction during AR time.
