Re: Get training mentality must be Deb's as well

It's funny how your solution to my daughter's ms is for me to go
in and tell them how to fix their program by educating myself on
all the intricacies of AR. As a parent, that is NOT my job. My
job is to protect my child. Just because you love AR and have
found a way to implement it to the benefit of every single child
in your school does not mean other schools or teachers are at your
level of understanding.
Just because I offer parents and teachers who are experiencing
troubles with the AR program different advice than yours does not
mean that I am right and you are wrong or vice versa. Parents and
teachers need to know that making AR punitive in ANY way stifles
the love of reading.
My "anger issue" is not my daughter's ms. It is with any program,
AR included, that uses tracking as a way to pigeonhole kids. I
agree that most of the problems noted on this chatboard have to do
with AR being misused. With that being said, fixing the problem
has several approaches. I approach my advice based on an
overarching theme of incentive only rather than anything punitive
to keep the love of reading paramount as the purpose of having an
AR program.
I'm sure you know as well as I do that any parent trying to get a
school to change a whole program for their child is ludicrous.
However, a parent can get a program modified for their child.
Making sure the program is not perceived as punitive by the parent
and student is a reasonable goal for a parent to pursue with the
school. If the school is unwilling to listen (and many are
because it involves a shift in their thinking or procedures) then
insisting your child be excused from AR becomes a parent's best
option. They must not be saddled with the rehab that will follow
if a child learns to hate reading when this result is completely
avoidable.
As far as not posting on this board because I choose to disagree
with you, I believe that is the purpose of a chatboard. We offer
our ideas and the OP chooses to do what they want to do.
