    Post: AR in Kindergarten

    Posted by Rebecca on 10/02/08

Hello, just wondering if anyone has any advice for me. My
son has just started his 2nd month of Kindergarten. He is
the only one in K participating in the AR program. He began
taking the tests 2 weeks ago and now he has taken 11 tests,
average ATOS 2.7, average % correct 91.8, earned 5.4 points
and read 10,278 words. He loves reading and he seems to be
really enjoying taking the tests but I am just wondering
whether I should continue encouraging him or try to ease
off on the testing. What is the average point score for a
kindergartner? Should he even be testing? He loves books so
much and I feel that testing him is teaching him how to
comprehend and remember the books he reads. Am I wrong?
Should I be against the testing? He usually reads at least
one AR book a day plus a wide selection of non AR books. He
is reading from ATOS 2.5 - 4 and I am just wondering how to
proceed and do the best for him. He has such a gift and
love for reading that I am just scared that I am not doing
enough for him or perhaps doing too much. The school has
set no reading level or point goal for him but I feel that
it would be good for him to have at least a point goal so
that he has something to aim for and I have a way of
rewarding him. What would be a realistic point goal? Any
advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.
