Re: University of Phoenix
Posted by Management on 5/08/07

I double as an IT Manager for one of the largest banks in the
nation and I also own/manage my own business. I am responsible
for hiring talent for both my job and my business. I can assure
you that the hiring process has changed a bit over the years.
When I’m recruiting I’m looking for the best. Schools such as
UoP, ECPI, and Strayer U, (to name a few) has served my staffing
needs adequately as a lot of these students have hands on
experience coming in the door. What I have learned during my
tenure is that a lot of the college graduates from tradition
schools do not come equip post-graduation. There are scenarios
where students have never actually touched or seen the very
things on their resumes in the real world. There are other
scenarios where the graduates of tradition colleges are
graduating with skills in outdated technology as major technology
is changing on an average of 1.5 – 2.5 years… When hiring, I am
looking for the person that can get the job done… Though I do
not discourage applicants from tradition colleges, I have found
that I typically recruit and hire students from technology &/or
trade schools. In closing, I would like to add that the student
determines what his/her degree is worth – not the institution.
If you’re aggressive towards learning, growing and being
professional & you are as equally aggressive and professional in
your post graduation employment search – you should do well. In
today’s economy, it is also imperative that you be partial to
traveling, and/or relocating to secure post-graduation
employment. Interning is also a very important step in building
the foundation of your new career.
