Re: New to Adult Education![]()

My two cents worth of advice would be to understand that
adult education will need to be approached a little
differently than you would elementary ed. You are no doubt
well versed in Pedagogy, but should spend a little time
looking into adult learning theory which is called Andragogy
by many.
Be aware of why adults are in school. What brings them
there? Usually it will be about career/life changes and
keeping up with new developments in existing careers. Some
times about learning for learnings sake. All of my college
education occured after age 40, and I can tell you horror
stories about teachers who assumed I was there just for
kicks, and who expected me as an adult learner to be
unemployed or retired or economically comfortable.
As an adult teacher, expect lots of hard work from your
students, but make sure the learning activities are relevant
to the needs of the learners.
