Hi Again,
I guess that it would depend on how above the class he was and on
the school he would attend. Kindergartners enter school at many
different levels and I am not sure where your little one would
fall. Most of my kindergartners start school knowing their
colors, shapes and some letters and numbers. Most can write their
name. Some start school reading, adding etc....
No matter what level a child is at I feel that there are basic
skills that we all need to work on. We all need fine motor
practice. We all need to work on following directions, problem
solving and processing. We all need to work on turn taking,
sharing with peers, group interaction and self-control. Along with
basic skills we explore many academic and artistic concepts. We
paint, make books, learn about science, money and time. While we
do not master all skills, all skills are introduced to all
children.
Many schools do differentiate the curriculum to best reach all
students. How does this work in kindergarten? I do guided
reading groups based on ability so that children are reading
material that challenges them at their level. This means that
sometimes I have a group of one - that child is reading so far
above the others and needs to be challenged at that level. During
math children are allowed to chose a paper that challenges them
best. Many activities are very open ended. One child may only
grasp that we use our lungs to breathe while another remembers and
understands the terms oxygen and carbon dioxide.
I do not know if I answered any questions or just created more. I
believe that all children have gifts or talents of some kind.
Every child is unique and special unto himself.
