Why has this discussion spiraled into a debate about the existence
of God? Whether the Christian God is correct is beside the point.
The question is about religion in schools. The simple fact of the
matter is that not everyone is Christian. Public schools are open
to all and must therefore respect the beliefs of all its pupils to
the best of its ability. Nobody should be forced to pray if they do
not believe in God. Period. Nobody should be blocked from praying
privately or in a group if he or she wishes. Period. We should all
be fighting for that kind of freedom of worship, rather than
attacking each other for having different beliefs.
We all have a very strong point of view when it comes to religion
and we all think we're right. This debate cannot be resolved and
any decisions made within the schools must operate under that
assumption.
I myself am an atheist and I ask everyone to respect that. Telling
me that I'm wrong and that I'm going to hell will not change my
mind; it'll only make me angrier. Notice that the atheists on this
board are just trying to defend themselves; they are not the ones
attacking. Tolerance and respect for others' beliefs is a noble
quality, regardless of your religion.
