Posted by mom of autistic twins on 9/07/05
I am the mother of twin four year olds. Because our previous school district
wanted to warehouse my girls, we moved. Now we are paying 900 dollars a month
just for the daycare portion of their day so that they can receive services in the
district's contract placement and be with typically developing children for part of
the day.
I would give my right arm to have the extra money to pay for a specialist for my
girls, but we can't do it. It really is a haves/have not situation in the treatment of
autism. There are so many therapies and bizarre medical practices out there...a
parent feels that they are grasping at straws, trying to find something (anything)
that will pull their child out of that giant well that they are trapped inside of. There
is a lot of guilt... maybe if I hadn't had them vaccinated, they'd be okay. Maybe if I
wasn't induced...etc.
We are getting ready to face getting shoved into kindergarten before I feel my
girls are ready, but they will be age appropriate for K. They are not potty trained
and one is a very big safety concern for me. I'm terrified. This is also a fiscal
decision on part of the district...you see, they are no longer reimbursed for early
childhood special ed when the kids are age appropriate for school. It just stinks
any way you look at it!
