I am pretty sure that AIM hasn't been updated for Mac for a long time (since 2004?). iChat comes with OS X and uses the AIM chat protocol but might have difficulty with some elements (not sure what kind of group chat you were using). If the included iChat doesn't work for you try an application called Adium. It has worked very well for me. http://www.adiumx.com/ Neal has answered your other questions.
