The thing is there are so many ways to make a slideshow with
iLife that it can get confusing. The Appleology link has
instructions for making the show in iPhoto, then burn with iDVD.
There method was to make an album in iPhoto with all the photos
you want included in the slideshow. Then use that album to
create a show, then export as a movie. This is a really easy
way to do things but it tends to take away some of the control
(i.e. zooming in to a particular spot in a photo).

Here's what I did when I made a memorial DVD for my
    father-in-law.

    1) I gathered up a bunch of photos and scanned them in at a high
resolution. High res photos let you zoom in without loss of
    clarity.

    2) Once all the photos were in iPhoto (in an album for ease of
finding them) I opened up iMovie.

    3) Next I brought in each photo, and used the Ken Burns effect
controls to zoom or pan (or both) to where I wanted the photo to
be. That's the Ken Burns effect in a nutshell, you set the
initial view of the photo then the last view of the photo and
iMovie will essentially move the photo to where you want it to
    end.

    4) I created my movie of photos complete with music then I
exported the movie at a high resolution.

    5) Next I opened iDVD and brought the movie into it. I wanted
it to play without menus so I had it play at the beginning of
the disc, I could have looped it here as well. I've done that
in the past for graduations. Just photos, no music, endlessly
    looping.

    6) I clicked burn and I was done.

So, no matter how you do it you need to use the parts of iLife
(iPhoto, iDVD, etc) and essentially create a movie which iDVD
can turn into a disc. I have made DVDs from Powerpoints,
Keynotes, iMovie projects, iPhoto slideshows and from iDVD
itself. Each method creates a slightly different kind of
    slideshow DVD.

    I hope this helps.
