Degree Path Advice

Hello. My name is Anita. I am a new york resident trying to get a teaching degree in NY in art education.

I went back to college for the wrong thing due to some poor advice of someone else. Instead of going back for a Bachelors in Art education where you get certified to be a teacher with the option of going on to your Masters in the future if you wish, I went back to school for Illustration at FIT in Manhattan.

I have an Associates and a Bachelors in Illustration. I also have an Associates in Fashion Design. But I cannot get certified this route, it seems I need art education schooling.

Due to research it seems the only path I can take is that I HAVE to go back to college for a Masters in Art Ed in order to be a teacher but I am still very confused about it.

I don't want to make the wrong decision. I am very lost and confused. It's taken me 12 years to finish college so far due to having a lot of health issues and I don't want to make any wrong ...See More

Josie I actually think you didn't mess up at all.... If I am not mistaken, you need a masters anyway to teach (at least in Ohio.) I graduated in 94, so I was grandfathered into the old law. I took my time getting my masters... But the young teachers I work with have something like 4 years to get it

I had a similar situation. I held an Associates degree in Graphics and Advertising, later realizing I wanted to teach art. After doing much research do get the degree I needed to get certified and do it the most cost effective way.

I had a similar situation. I held an Associates degree in Graphics and Advertising, later realizing I wanted to teach art. After doing much research do get the degree I needed to get certified and do it the most cost effective way.

I went to a local college and applied as an undergrad.to obtain the Bachelor's degree needed. They excepted much of my studio courses and what they did not accept they put under electives (I have so many credits it's crazy). After my first year of college as an undergrad. ( I took courses during interims and summers too). I applied and was accepted to begin my grad courses at the same time as being an undergrad. Therefore, I graduated from both programs at the same time. Due to my finances I earned a CEAS, with 22 grad credits. So I was unable to complete my Masters, but earned the certification.

I wish you luck. Here in New Jersey it is very difficult to get a job teaching.
