I have always loved being an art teacher... until the last few years. My principal is insisting that I don't do enough reading and writing with the students. She wants me to now engaged them in meaningful discussion even while they are doing their projects.

I understand the push towards literacy, and I have certainly stepped up my game, but I am concerned that she is less interested in the artmaking now.

She wants me to stop every ten minutes or so to 'ask essential questions to ensure accountable talk.' At this rate, we will never get our projects done!

I think students should be able to chill a little bit and enjoy their artwork. There is nothing wrong with them chatting for a little bit as they work.

It's getting very frustrating. Is there anyone else out there experiencing the same kinds of things? Any thoughts?
