Re: Should the arts be included in the testing for NCLB?
Posted by spchtchr on 3/25/08

The pressures of NCLB make me feel that the arts are being
marginalized. Our band and drama programs are missing
almost two weeks of whole class instruction because of "end
of instruction" testing for the state.

The testing is NOT at the end of instruction...when we're
through with this cycle (we're on trimester, so it happens
twice a year), there are still 4 weeks of school left.

Scheduling the tests is hairy, and any class (read:
elective) that has multiple levels of students will be hard
pressed to carry on throughout the interruptions. My
traditional curriculum in advanced drama at this point in
the year is preparing a spring play...but it's difficult to
mount a show when a different group of kids will be gone
everyday for a two week stretch.
