Re: How do you motivate the unmotivated?

Greetings, I'm a work in progress in this, but this has worked pretty well the last few years for motivation in my k-8 schools: *survey student interest & find a medium or activity they really want to work with...and use that as a reward *Use smART reports to praise students - works through grade 5 - they take them home, I keep a portion with the student's name for a "drawing" out of a hat & hand out prizes through the year. Homeroom teachers sometimes post the rewards in their room or on their doors...and parents appreciate the positive contact. It's a great help to catch them being good. *Use "free time" and/or "outside time" as a reward....works well with mall grades, esp. middle school *Get a school-wide collaborative project going. Each year we usually have some kind of poster or t-shirt contest, which generates a lot of momentum. Best to work together with your PTO, as they can help spread the word & enthusiasm & can help with rewards. *Do hands-on activities! I try to include a sculpture lesson with each grade level. All my kids love clay & will work pretty hard to earn the privilege to create with it. *Then small things....like after a good class, I ask them to raise their right hand, put it over their left shoulder & give themselves a big pat on the back. *Praise....as often as able (and thanking them for the good they do)....individually & as a class!!! Hope this helps. On 4/27/08, amanda wrote: > My students are motivated by grades... they'll do the > assignment but may not be too happy about it.
