Re: how do you make scratchboard
Posted by debio on 5/09/08

I've done this for years: Small pieces of good quality drawing paper-
tell them to color "waxy, shiny". Put a section of newspaper (a
group of 6 - 10 pages) down for a pad to use under the paper, the
crayon makes a good thick surface then. The newspaper gives a little
and lets the crayon adhere well. Use good tempera, a dab of
detergent helps sometimes, and use a fat brush. Make sure they wipe
off the brush and use a thin layer of paint. Even kindergarteners
can do this, I used to wipe the extra paint off of theirs. use the
newspaper pad again to put the paper on to draw when dry. Won't tear
as easily. I used to use large spike type nails to draw, but I bet
the paperclip idea will work. The kids got a kick out of drawing
    with a nail.
