Re: Teacher Shortage Lie
Posted by Jane Doe on 2/29/08

I agree ... just coming back from a fair where they processed 800+
applicants last year for a few slots - going on to a fair in a week where
there will be 100s, many out of state, vying for a couple of positions ...
I have a high GPA, original degree from UC Berk. EC units from
UCLA,letters (but unfortunately NOT special ed, speech, male, diverse,
young ...) ... I have binders full of all the hoops - tests, certificates,
coursework, permits I've paid for in time and money for the past 6 years
(1 1/2 have years for the credential not working). I'm in my 4th year of
teaching and I'm in my 3rd year with no health care. From one year to the
next we don't know what next year's employment looks like. I feel shamed
into NOT saying anything because whenever they talk about the shortage,
they always qualify it by saying a 'shortage of GOOD teachers' ... if I'm
having trouble finding a secure, rewarding position I must not be one of
the 'good ones' (that'll shut me up). Or maybe, I don't enjoy working with
kids. This is a huge industry - racket. The reason teachers CAN be paid
so little continue to take on more mandates, have little to no job
security, have little respect and say, is that it's an employer's market.
