Posted by jay on 9/03/08 I have been teaching for a while and all this week I have gone home every day with headaches. This is such a stressful time of year for everyone. There is so much extra work that has to be done now--things like setting up your grade book, writing and copying parent letters or syllabi, contacting parents, required trainings, etc. On top of all that, this is your first year so everything is new. In a few more weeks the non-teaching side of the job will get easier. The advice about quitting now is really bad advice. The first year is hard, but this is the hardest time of all. Some suggestions--if you're worried about parent issues, call home now for all your students or at least potential troublemakers. Make a positive phone call introducing yourself and saying something positive about their child. Believe me, it will help you in case you have to contact them about problems later on. If you think your students are bored, think about ways to do games related to your content--not every day, but occasionally. And think about ways to get the students working together. I'm not a fan of most group work, but I do like to pair students frequently for short amounts of time to review vocabulary or just compare answers. Just keep the time short enough that they can't get off-task. It makes things more interesting for them to be able to talk with a friend, even if it's about content.
