Re: beating myself up...

I've had a veteran teacher say the first three years go like this
year 1- just survival- you don't have the most interesting
lesson plans, you don't do everything perfect...you do what
you have to do to just survive!
year 2- practice- now you can take a little time to improve
those lessons, you still don't do everything perfect, you
still have a lot to learn, but you are getting there
year 3- you've made it and now you will have the time to feel
confident, crack down on those behavior issues almost before
they start and actually enjoy the students!
I'm in year 4 and am amazed at how much I have learned (really
just about learning and students in general).
Just my opinion...but I don't give into that whole boredom
thing. I teach high school and believe that we are not here
to entertain the students all day long. They need to have
some intrinsic motivation and realize that some people just
like to learn for the sake of learning and don't need a shiny
reward for doing it. I definitely have days where we mix it
up and do activities and get away from paper and pencil, but
they need to understand the basics before we can do that and
that is where the "boring" normal class (with notes and all!)
comes in. I think just acting excited about your subject and
interacting with them during those "boring" days is enough to
help them feel involved in the lessons.
I could come up with a lesson that is totally hands on and I
find incredibly interesting...and I'm sure half the class
would still find it boring lol (because we are still working
and learning and not just talking or watching a movie)
