    Re: maintaining classroom of learners
Posted by Very Veteran Teacher on 9/05/08

I pull kids out of class k-12 for ESL, and it does concern me
that students are missing out on what the classroom teacher is
doing. At the same time, I know that my ESL kids need my help so
that they can make more progress in their regular classes. I
haven't seen a problem with the attitude of the other students
when I pull one or two kids. They always seem to accept the
fact that students are pulled from class for different reasons,
and they aren't bothered by my opening the door and motioning to
my ESL kid to come with me. I make every effort not to disturb
the class, and most teachers continue what they are doing and
don't see me as an interruption. The other kids are very
accepting of kids who need to go with me, and when a child is
sitting in class unable to understand anything going on or to do
the work, the rest of the class already knows he or she needs
special help. Just yesterday I had a student I had never seen
before stop me in the hall to ask about one on my completely non-
English speaking students. She had been worried about the girl
and just wanted to know how she was doing. I was very impressed
that a middle school kid would be that concerned about a student
she didn't even know and that she would take the initiative to
stop an unknown teacher in the hall to ask about the girl.
