I have a real issue with this advice. I have no desire to hang out
with a bunch of teachers who are sitting around bad mouthing the
students and parents of the school. To hear my students being
referred to as "lazy, unmotivated, etc" students is not, in my
opinion, professional. Talking about "how hammered I got last
weekend" is again, not professional, nor anything I would be
sitting around and bragging about. I have been called
"anti-social" because of this very issue. Truthfully, I refuse to
take part in the "drama" of this small group of teachers who feel
they own the place. I'd rather eat my lunch in the staff room and
go back to work at my desk, than get caught up in the childish
behavior of those who think they are grown ups, even though they
act like our middle school students.
Does this sound arrogant? It might come across that way. So be it.
I am there to influence the lives of students and impress my
principal -- NOT the other teachers in the building. I'll be
polite to everyone, I'll do what is asked of me provided it is
tied in with my teaching. I'll collaborate with others on cross
content lessons. But I will NOT participate in situations that are
nothing more than high-school behaviors. I have too much integrity
and maturity to do that.
