Elizabeth,
Have documents that show student progress, report cards, test
scores, student work, writing journals. Parents will want to
talk about their child's grades, work habits in and outside of
class, citizenship, and potential growth.
Allow the parents to do a lot of the talking and use their
concerns and questions to guide you in your conference.
Discuss strengths and areas of weakness. Maintain a positive
attitude. Discuss ways the parents can assist their children
at home. If you have a good turnout at conferences, celebrate
the fact that your students' parents are active and involved
in their child's life. It's always a good thing to have parent
involvement.
Remember, you are the professional. New or not, they will look
to you for advice. But don't let that intimidate you. If you
think you may be facing a sketchy conference, ask for some
support from your admin. or another teacher. There is nothing
wrong with support staff sitting in on conferences.
Good luck and stay strong! :)
