Elizabeth,
Do not do what I have seen many other teachers do:
- judge families on their viewpoints, ethics, values, or style of
living
- involve youself in functions or responsibilities that are
actually family functions or responsibilities. You are not a
part of their family, you never can be, nor should you ever be.
State employees should not misconstrue themselves as having
priviledged access to the family, its members, or their personal
business.
Above all, remember that you are human, your students are human,
and their family members are human. Sometimes it is hard to keep
that in mind in this beastly schooling system we are a part of.
