As I observe children and consider their growth and
development in relation to these theorists, I find Piaget and
Vygotsky to both have important, valid, and useful theories.
In my experience, I do not find that one cancels out the
other.
I would not claim that either theorist holds the absolute and
total truths about children's growth and development. They
both offer very useful theories that we can definitely use
and learn from in teaching young children.
It is my understanding that a theory is not an absolute truth
set in concrete, but rather a theory to consider, research,
investigate, and compare to our real life experiences.
It is my opinion that we can not expect to use a theory to
define infants and young children anymore than we can expect
to hold the ocean in our hand.
