Post: How do you handle biting?

Posted by frustrated on 1/15/08

I am a childcare worker in a 2 yr old toddler classroom. We
often have problems with biting and I was curious how
others handle this situation. We have one biter in
particular that will hit, kick, throw, and bite at any
moment for any reason. Even no reason at all. At one point
we decided to count how many bites we prevented plus the
ones that slipped by. We lost count in just a day. The
toddler also attends church on Sunday's at our center. His
Father informed me he bit 4 times just in one hour during
service. Our policy is no spanking, yelling, pinching, etc.
which is obviously reasonable. We also aren't allowed to
use "time out" anymore which I think is strange. We can't
use any form of punishing accept staring them in the eyes
saying "No biting/hitting/etc., give him/her a hug." That
just isn't cutting it. We also aren't allowed to say
anything negative to the parent's. If we have something
negative to say about a childs behavior, we have to take it
to the director and she handles it. There is no limit to
how many times a child can bite. They will never be "kicked
out" of the center. I just don't understand how a child can
learn if there's never any discipline going on or permanent
action taken? What's your take on this? And how do you deal
    with the unruly children?

Oh, and I think I should add it looks bad on us when a
child gets biten. We get treated as if we aren't even
paying attention since they don't know how many bites we
    actually prevent.
