Re: Does anyone do home daycare/pre-school?????
Posted by pktchr on 3/14/08

    I have a half day home-based preschool program. It's
wonderful, I love it, and I do make more than I did working
in community and church based preschool programs. But, as
Schari mentioned, there are a LOT of things to take into
consideration when deciding if it's the right fit for you.
My preschool takes up my entire lower level (that's 1/3 of my
house that my family basically doesn't use anymore. Not to
mention the back yard and the areas of the garage and attic
that are used to store preschool stuff).
I spend way more time planning, cleaning, calling/e-mailing
parents, etc. than I do in the actual classroom.
Your husband/family really needs to be onboard with the idea.
They'll be a part of it, even if they don't think they will.
And like Schari said, all that said.......I wouldn't want to
be doing anything else. I love, love, love having my own
program. Not answering to anyone else (except the kids,
    parents, and DCFS).
Contact your state's division of family services and examine
the requirements (this was the most expensive part of the
process. I ended up putting a sliding door and patio in as an
extra fire escape). Find out what organizations in your
community provides trainings for daycare/preschool providers.
They can be a huge resource (one of them in Illinois is CHASI
    - Children's home and aid society of Illinois). Check with
your city and your neighborhood association (if you have one)
to see if there are any restrictions or if you need a business
license or special use permit (this was the most difficult
part of the process for me. Despite the fact that my
neighborhood by-laws allowed home businesses, the neighbors
still raised a stink with the city. It all smooth out with
few hard feelings, but it was a nightmare and almost ended my
    plans).
Sorry this is so long. If you have any more questions I'm
happy to try to answer them. It has definitely been worthwhile!!!
