I've always been told not to start arguments with students, and if students get defensive, just try to ward them off by saying, "end of discussion" or "we can discuss that after class". These techniques don't seem to be working. For one thing, when I tell a student to pay attention, they try to convince me that they are. If I ignore them and go abot my teaching, my other students will laugh thinking that haha, you've got the teacher. It's not in my nature to let people get the wrong idea about me, so it's really hard for me to just nip it in the bud. Any ideas on how to eliminate this problem?
